Deafness and Autism: Educational Impact and Strategies

Join Jennifer Hills for this 2 part series as she looks at Autism Screening of Deaf or hard of hearing children and the Functions of Behavior and Strategies for Behavior Change.

In part 1 of the workshop she will explore the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for autism in the context of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. take a look at checklists and critique items according to their applicability to children who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Autistic behavior will also be discussed in the context of children with hearing differences and next steps will be considered for children with a suspected autism diagnosis.

In Part 2, you will explore various challenging behaviors that are experienced in the school setting. The four functions of behavior will be presented and defined; and the use of functionally equivalent replacement behaviors will be expanded upon so it can be used by teachers with their students in the classroom. Strategies will be given to support student success at school and at home.

 

Learner Outcomes:

The participant will be able to:

1) describe behaviors that indicate possible autism or developmental evaluation in students who are D/HH

2) name some tools used to screen or test children for autism and other developmental disabilities

3) name and describe the four functions of behavior

4) provide one strategy for each behavioral function

 

Jennifer Hills

Jennifer Hills has been a teacher of the Deaf and hard of hearing since 2012 and has recently became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, specifically working with children who are Deaf or hard of hearing with other disabilities. She is currently a Special Education doctoral student with research interests in Deafness with disabilities and behavior. She also has a son who is a Deaf adult who is gifted and has other disabilities.
